Our History

Humphrey Appliance has been serving San Diego for over 50 years. Robert Humphrey started the business in 1947 and it's been family owned ever since. Robert's ambition drove the business to success, which was a crucial part of supporting his wife and 8 children.

Growing up, Robert's sons were an integrative part of Humphrey Appliance as well. From answering calls to making deliveries, Robert shaped his sons into ideal businessmen. Joe, Tom, and Richard Humphrey took over the business as their father retired; Joe and Tom still run the show to this day. Mary, Robert's eldest daughter, is currently the accountant for the appliance store. The business moved to two different locations under the reign of Robert Humphrey, and twice under the watch of Joe, Tom, and Richard. The most recent move has been to El Cajon Boulevard, where the business currently lies.

Back in 1947, the store sold both new and used appliances. Robert was attracted to this line of business since it was successful and allowed customers of varying economic backgrounds to afford appliances. He always felt a duty to his community, and it showed in his passion and dedication for his business. He aimed to establish lifelong relationships with his customers. In the late 1990s, however, Joe, Tom, and Richard realized that the same duty to the community could be accomplished in a different manner. The used business was beginning to become a burden due to the many defects which constantly occurred; furthermore, the used business is a messy business. To compensate for this change, the 3 brothers entered the scratch ‘n’ dent business. Customers appreciated the fact that a brand new appliance with minor scratches could be sold for such a cheaper price. Less technicians were needed for repairs, and business flourished. Today, their father would be proud.

Unfortunately, in a span of 3 years, Humphrey Appliance lost 2 very important individuals. Business partner Richard Humphrey passed away in 2002, followed closely by his father and founder of Humphrey Appliance, Robert Humphrey, in 2005. Though a devastation to Joe, Tom, and the business, the two remaining sons proudly keep their father’s store running.

Currently, Joe has four healthy sons from ages 17-23 who are learning the ropes. Joe teaches them how to deal with customers, answer phone calls, and make deliveries; just as Robert had done with Joe, Tom and Richard. The four boys are learning how their father and uncle coordinate such a well run business. Humphrey Appliance has been family owned since 1947, and will continue to be family owned for days to come. When a family enters the store, we treat them as our family.
